Despite putting up some monster numbers in the 90’s, Albert Belle will unfortunately always be under the cloud of suspicion because of the era he played in. While there has never been proof that Belle ever used performance-enhancements and Jose Canseco even said Albert was 100% legit, he is now a forgotten slugger of the Steroid Era. So much so that Topps hadn’t included Belle in a product since 2001.
Of course, that may be due to the fact that Albert Bell is bat-shit crazy.
So you can imagine my surprise when I found cards of Albert Belle in 2011 Topps Tribute of all places. Remember, Topps is the company that is not allowed to create cards of another weird individual because of his off the field “antics”. As an Albert Belle fan, I am very happy to see his return and hope he is included in other Topps products in the future.
For those on Twitter, check out Joe Ribando, the Director of Player Licensing for Topps Company. Recently, Topps asked through Twitter who they would like to see in upcoming products and asked to send it to Mr. Ribando. I of course did not hesitate. Not surprisingly, he ignored me but who knows, right? Maybe someday Jose will come roaring back to Topps.
